Biography

Paul assists clients in strategically protecting and enforcing their intellectual property (IP). He is skilled in the procurement and management of large, international patent and trademark portfolios for a variety of industries such as packaging, consumer products, manufacturing, medical device, power generation, lighting, lawn and garden, and hydroponics. Clients, both small and Fortune 100, repeatedly turn to Paul to enforce and defend their patent rights and products through post-grant proceedings before the USPTO, patent litigation, Amazon patent enforcement proceedings, settlement negotiations, and patent opinions; including a noteworthy case where he negotiated a very client-friendly settlement for a global entertainment company in a matter relating to an amusement park ride.

As an integral part of his practice, Paul truly enjoys getting to know his clients’ industries, businesses, people, and products. He has extensive experience with consumer products and packaging technologies, manufacturing and processing equipment, medical devices, forestry equipment, wear parts for forestry and excavating equipment, robotics, power generation equipment, jet engine technology, water filtration, metal coating, coated cables, fiber optic cable connectors and systems, sensors, and plastic injection molding equipment.

Due to this vast experience, Paul was chosen to be a faculty member for the Patent Resources Group, where he taught Crafting & Drafting: Winning Patents to hundreds of patent attorneys and agents nationwide. All of this enables him to excel at providing trusted counsel to and successful outcomes for clients.

Appeared in several inter partes review proceedings before the USPTO.

Successfully lead reexamination proceedings before the USPTO.

Appeared in U.S. District Court in multiple patent litigations, dealing with complex technologies and legal issues.

Acts as the lead intellectual property counsel for a variety of companies that research, develop, manufacture and sell technologies such as spinal surgical instruments and implants, forestry machines and wear parts, consumer products, hydroponics, grow lighting, and lawn and garden equipment.

Renders opinions, both informal and formal, to from engineers to C-Suite executives regarding patent infringement, validity, patentability, freedom to operate, trademark infringement, copyright protection and infringement, and trade secret protection and misappropriation.

Advised a large consumer products company regarding patent filing and prosecution strategies for both U.S. and foreign patent applications related to consumer products, packaging technologies, and manufacturing equipment/ processes.

Performed clearance and freedom-to-market opinions regarding new consumer products and related technologies.

Provided patent infringement, invalidity, freedom to operate, and/or clearance opinions to a Fortune 50 technology company relating to combustion turbines, wind turbines, and jet engines.
