Sam is a litigator who primarily focuses on complex insurance-coverage disputes between policyholders and insurers. His work in this area includes “occurrence” disputes, E&O coverages, Kentucky uninsured and under-insured motorist coverage exclusions, builder’s risk, cancellation issues, causation disputes over sources of damage to property, personal property valuation litigation, underwriting negligence, litigation over exclusions for intentional or criminal acts, insurer liability for broker negligence, agency issues, and business interruption claims, among others. Sam has been named a Kentucky Super Lawyers “Rising Star”® in litigation for four straight years.
Sam currently serves as Treasurer/ Vice President of the Louisville Bar Association, and he is very active in the local legal community. He also serves as an editorial board member for Insurance Law Essentials, an influential trade publication, and as vice-chair of technology and social media for the American Bar Association’s Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee. Sam has litigated insurance-coverage defenses for underwriters in a wide variety of disputes in state and federal courts in Kentucky and elsewhere, including theft, fire loss, underwriting error, cancellation disputes, and a myriad of others.
As a former reporter, Sam is also passionate about media and open records law. He has represented a variety of Kentucky companies and individuals in disputes under Kentucky’s Open Records Act, and has also defended news reporters in defamation, libel, and slander actions.
Sam is heavily involved in public service with the state and local legal community. He serves on the editorial board of Bench & Bar magazine – the Kentucky Bar Association’s flagship publication. He also devotes a significant portion of his time to pro bono work and volunteerism.
Outside of the office, Sam loves fly fishing, watching sports, traveling, reading mysteries, and spending time with his kids. He is the reigning champion of the Frost Brown Todd Louisville office fantasy football league.
