Biography

Dr. Bruce Wu is both an attorney and an engineer. He counsels clients from a broad range of technology sectors, particularly bio-tech and high-tech, many of which are startup companies that benefit from his pragmatic and holistic approach to building an IP-centric legal strategy. Bruce’s experience encompasses life sciences such as pharmaceuticals, oncology, drug delivery, medical devices, genetics, therapeutics, and synthetic biology, along with high-tech such as clean-tech, materials science, consumer electronics hardware and software, microfluidics, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and genAI.

With respect to IP, Bruce assists his clients with all aspects of patent drafting and prosecution, trademark registration and clearance, and copyright and trade secret protection. His experience includes providing clients with patentability, validity, and infringement opinions. Additionally, he also helps clients navigate protecting their IP assets from different legal frameworks, such as regulatory (e.g., FDA).

Bruce has been recognized internationally for building and developing IP and legal teams in both private and public companies. He has served as Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary for a number of life sciences and AI companies and has advised C-suite executives as well as Boards of Directors. Consequently, Bruce understands the importance of delivering the efficient and pragmatic legal counsel that startup companies seek, and routinely helps scientific founders and in-house legal counsels navigate legal issues in an easy-to-understand way. Beyond his legal roles, Bruce has held positions as Head of Business Development and Chief People Officer, giving him a well-rounded perspective and the ability to provide practical and understandable legal services tailored to the needs of businesses.

Bruce is a frequent speaker on navigating a range of legal issues within technology companies. He taught a course in intellectual property law at George Mason University’s School of Management. Bruce has a strong interest in alternative dispute resolution, including negotiation and mediation. He aims to guide his clients to understand and resolve legal issues in a way that empowers all the parties involved.
