Frost Brown Todd (FBT) Counsel Bruce Wu, Ph.D., is the latest attorney at the firm to be credentialed by the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP). Wu now holds both the Information Privacy Professional/United States (CIPP/US) and Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP) certifications.
The AIGP is a global credential certifying that the holder can ensure safety and trust in the development and deployment of ethical artificial intelligence (AI) and ongoing management of AI systems. The certification was introduced last year in recognition of the growing need for organizations to have employees and outside consultants with the requisite knowledge and experience to guide them in their AI integrations.
The CIPP/US, by comparison, has quickly become one of the most recognized credentials in the field of data security and information privacy, focusing specifically on U.S. privacy laws, regulations, and practices that are applicable to the private sector. Common CIPP/US credential holders include chief compliance officers and legal counsel like Wu and FBT attorney Mason Clutter, who previously served as chief privacy officer at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Wu, who is based in FBT’s San Francisco and Washington, D.C. offices, earned his doctorate in engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before practicing law. He has held several C-suite positions throughout his career, including as chief legal officer and chief people officer. A member of FBT’s Private Equity and Venture practice, as well as the Intellectual Property (IP) practice, Wu currently advises a broad range of clients in the high-tech and bio-tech sectors on all aspects of legal matters, including patent, trademark, and copyright procurements, due diligence, commercial transactions, and compliance such as privacy. He is also a member of FBT’s Outside General Counsel Services team, serving as fractional general counsel for multiple growth-mode companies.
Wu’s experience leading teams, combined with his acumen as both an IP and corporate attorney and his community involvement in the startup community, make him a tremendous asset and resource to FBT clients seeking to build and capitalize on their global IP portfolios.
Additionally, Wu works closely with members of FBT’s Data, Digital Assets and Technology team, advising businesses that are innovating with or integrating AI into various aspects of their operations. In this area, he helps clients institute AI governance programs, proactively address data security and privacy concerns, and navigate a host of other AI opportunities and risks unique to their industry.
